What is Repetitive Motion / Stress Injury?

Repetitive stress injury (RSI) (also known as repetitive motion injury, repetitive strain injury, cumulative trauma disorder (CT), repetitive motion disorder (RMD), and occupational overuse syndrome) is an injury caused to the musculoskeletal and nervous systems that may be caused by repetitive motions or tasks, forceful exertions, trauma, vibrations, mechanical compression, continuos pressing against hard surfaces, or sustained or awkward positions.

The term "repetitive strain injury" is sometimes used generally as a diagnostic term which can be understood to include such other diagnoses as:

  • carpal tunnel syndrome

  • cubital tunnel syndrome

  • radial tunnel syndrome

  • DeQUervain's syndrome (inflamation of the thumb tendons)

  • thoracic outlet syndrome

  • trigger finger or trigger thumb

  • tennis elbow (epicondylosis), and

  • tarsal tunnel syndrome (somewhat like carpal tunnel, but in the ankle)

Our Firm has extensive experience in handling the above types of injuries, as well as elbow and ulnar nerve injuries, shoulder and rotator cuff injuries, back injuries from constant bending, twisting and lifting, and re-injury of body parts already previously injured.

Work Comp Covers Repetitive Injuries Like Carpal Tunnel

The Missouri Workers Compensation Law considers a repetitive motion injury to be one which results from continuous stress placed on the body over a long period of time, with onset of symptoms typically coming on gradually over time.  Repetitive motion injuries are distinguished from traumatic injuries, which are the result of a single, identifiable occurrence or accident occuring on a particular day at a particular time which typically causes the immediate or near-immediate onset of the injury or of symptoms of pain.

Missouri Workers’ Compensation provides medical benefits to employees who develop repetitive motion injuries and carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of their work duties.  Repetitive motion can develop from numerous work duties from continuous computer typing to use of vibrating industrial machinery such as a jackhammer or other vibratory tool.  A repetitive motion injury often results in damage and tearing to nerves and tissues causing radiating pain, numbness and tingling symptoms in the hands or other body part affected.  An employee who experiences continued symptoms without seeking medical treatment could face much more serious trauma and permanent injury.

Carpal tunnel and repetitive motion injuries most commonly develop in the arms, hands and shoulder from use and flexing of the arms, wrist and hands.  Because such injuries develop over time, it is not uncommon for employers and Workers’ Compensation insurance carriers to deny such claims initially and force the employee to fight to obtain benefits.  As with any Workers’ Compensation claim, notice of injury to the employer upon the development of symptoms is important to ensure protection of your right to benefits.  Medical evidence in these cases is often less clear because the symptoms develop over time, and as such, we often develop claims through further independent medical evaluation by hiring independent expert doctors our office choses to provide a more independent examination of the repetitive motion injury to determine the nature and cause of such symptoms.
